Restoring solar panels

 The flexible solar panels had been getting a bit cruddy looking and I heard on one of the sailing forums about restoring them, so I decided to follow them and see how well it would work:

Stage 1

Thoroughly clean the panels. I know it doesn't look like it, but this is the state of the panels after cleaning! 



Stage 2

With fine wet and dry sandpaper (800) wet clean the panel, wash off, then with very fine (1,000) sandpaper wet clean again, wash off and dry. The spray with WD40 as a protective layer. You can see the difference. 

Stage 3

Repeat for the other panel. Apply a second layer of WD 40 and leave to dry.

Wind at last… we (Sheila, Katie, Elizabeth and me) went out for a brief sail yesterday and there was wind. Sheila remarked how different the helm felt with wind. The Kingfisher has a relatively large rudder so even very small movements make a significant difference to the direction. About 5 nautical miles sailed. Not far but good to be out on the water. And still relatively warm. What was surprising to us was that since it was glorious sailing weather and the previous weekend almost no wind at all… there were almost no sailing boats out sailing (I counted 3 others, and none when we started.)

What no wind again?

 So time to chill out after a lot of work… in other words time for a sail. 09:30 we put the new straps on the bimini (yes, this works really well now) and motored out of the marina and put up the sails. Wow… we're sailing along at 0.9 knots… then 1.1 knots… trim the sails and we're speeding along at maybe 2.1 knots. And it looks like it's race day for the local sailing club. A dozen boats on the water all trying to get the speed they need to beat the others. And then the wind dies. Well… it does where we are, about a mile or two out from the shore. Along the shore they are still trying to race and going nowhere.  So what to do when you're going nowhere? Get out the paddles for the dinghy and paddle! And it's the first of December… …and it's hot enough to be in a shirt and no sweater! Even me!

Christmas boat & maintenance

15th November 2022 I had a phone call from the marina asking me to come down to discuss something. Initially that worried me as I thought there must be something wrong with Liza . They assured me there wasn't and when I got there the marina operations director asked if they could use Liza as the 'Christmas boat'. So…  21st November 2022 Liza was lifted out of the water 1 week later! I had been intending lifting her to do bi-annual maintenance in the spring, so that was brought forward. There was very little growth on the hull. A little on the bottom of the keels but for two years in the water I was very pleased with how little there was. Probably because I sail her a lot so there is regular water movement.  Then she was moved round to the entrance to the new marina village where there are sheds with food and other shops and a large Christmas tree in the middle.
